Autumn Fiske's Ecuador Adventure: From Quito to the Amazon

From sipping hot chocolate with my Amazonian hosts to cycling through Indigenous villages, Ecuador mainland taught me why this country deserves more than a Galapagos visit.

From sipping hot chocolate with my Amazonian hosts to cycling through Indigenous villages, Ecuador mainland taught me why this country deserves more than a Galapagos visit.

Ecuador had been on my travel list for years. My partner Santi and I visit Colombia annually since he's from there, and I kept looking at the map, knowing Ecuador was just a short flight from Bogotá and we finally made it happen. We added eight days on G Adventures' Ecuador Quest itinerary, and I'm so glad we did. As a travel advisor, I needed to experience this country myself, to feel the altitude, taste the food, and understand what makes mainland Ecuador such a compelling destination.

Ecuador sits literally at the center of the Earth, and those eight days showed off the country's extraordinary range. Rolling natural wonders in the Amazon, the dramatic peaks of the Ecuadorian highlands, the colonial charm of Quito. I came looking for adventure and cultural immersion. I found both, plus something I didn't expect: a deeper appreciation for how meaningful travel can genuinely support local communities.

The Amazon Changed Everything

The moment I keep thinking about is our Amazon jungle experience. We spent a couple of nights near the Napo River, staying in rustic wooden huts with a local Quichua family as our hosts in the community of Cando. We hiked through the rainforest, plunged into waterfalls, and learned about traditional plant uses on guided forest walks. But what stays with me most is our hosts making us hot chocolate over the fire, and eating fish they'd cooked wrapped in banana leaves. Those are the flavours and moments that don't show up in brochures.

Through G Adventures' partnership with Planeterra Foundation, we cycled to the nearby Indigenous community of Shandia. For 40 minutes, we pedaled through lush Amazonian landscapes with a community member as our guide. What struck me was learning that these cultural tours are designed by the community to maintain their Indigenous traditions and create opportunities for young people who might otherwise leave to find work elsewhere. Knowing my visit was contributing to that preservation made the experience even more meaningful.

Quito Surprised Me

The first couple of days were challenging in Quito. Quito sits at high altitude, and my body needed time to adjust. I'm grateful we arrived a couple of days before our G Adventures tour officially started. By day three, I felt acclimatized and ready to explore. That's a crucial tip I now share with clients, give yourself buffer days before an active itinerary.

What I didn't expect was how much there is to do right from Quito. The city is surrounded by dramatic Andean peaks, volcanic craters, cloud forests, and vibrant cultural markets. It's the perfect base for day trips. I especially loved visiting Cotopaxi, the iconic snow-capped active volcano that rises 5,897 meters. One of the highest active volcanoes in the world, it has this rare, near-perfect symmetrical cone shape that appears to erupt straight out of the flat Andean plains. It's stunning in a way photos simply cannot capture.

Who Should Experience This

This trip is ideal for first-timers to Ecuador who want to explore the mainland before or after a Galápagos adventure. If you're already planning to visit those famous islands, adding a week or two on the mainland is something you won't regret. It rounds out your understanding of Ecuador's incredible diversity, from coastal lowlands to Andean highlands to the Amazon basin.

Now that I've been there, I understand this destination on a level I simply couldn't have before. I know how to prepare clients for the altitude. I know which moments will move them. I know the value of those G for Good community experiences that turn tourism into something reciprocal. Ecuador is a destination I'm genuinely passionate about recommending, and I already dream of returning for an ultimate Galápagos itinerary, with marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and giant tortoises. But first, let me help you discover why mainland Ecuador deserves a spot on your travel plans.

FAQs

Yes — travel advisor Autumn Fiske makes a strong case for adding one to two weeks on the mainland to any Galápagos itinerary. The mainland offers a completely different range of experiences, from Amazon rainforest stays and Andean highland peaks to colonial Quito, giving visitors a much fuller picture of Ecuador's diversity before or after the famous islands.

Quito sits at significant elevation and acclimatization can take several days. Autumn Fiske found the first couple of days in the city challenging and strongly advises arriving at least two days before any active tour begins. Giving your body buffer time to adjust before a demanding itinerary is the single most important preparation tip she now passes on to her clients.

Through G Adventures' Ecuador Quest itinerary, travellers can spend nights in rustic wooden huts near the Napo River as guests of a local Quichua family in the community of Cando. Experiences include guided rainforest hikes, waterfall swims, learning about traditional plant uses, and sharing meals — such as fish cooked in banana leaves and hot chocolate made over an open fire — with their hosts.

The Shandia cycling experience involves a roughly 40-minute ride through lush Amazonian landscapes, guided by a local community member. The tour is part of a Planeterra Foundation partnership designed to preserve Indigenous traditions and create economic opportunities for young people in the community, meaning visitor participation directly supports local livelihoods.

Cotopaxi is an active, snow-capped volcano rising to 5,897 metres and is considered one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. It is notable for its near-perfect symmetrical cone shape, which appears to rise straight out of the flat Andean plains. Autumn Fiske describes it as stunning in a way that photographs cannot fully capture, and it is accessible as a day trip from Quito.

The eight-day Ecuador Quest itinerary covers key highlights of mainland Ecuador, including time in Quito, a visit to Cotopaxi volcano, and an immersive stay with a Quichua community near the Napo River in the Amazon. The trip also includes a community cycling experience in Shandia through a Planeterra Foundation partnership, combining adventure with meaningful cultural exchange.

Mainland Ecuador is particularly well suited to first-time visitors to the country who want to explore beyond the Galápagos Islands. It appeals to travellers seeking a mix of adventure, cultural immersion, and natural diversity — spanning the Amazon basin, Andean highlands, and colonial city experiences. Those already planning a Galápagos trip are especially encouraged to extend their itinerary to include the mainland.
