FAQs

River cruising is travel aboard a small, purpose-built ship along inland waterways — Europe's Rhine, Danube, Douro, and Moselle, Asia's Mekong, or Egypt's Nile, among many others. Ships carry between 100 and 200 passengers and dock right in the centre of towns and cities — not at a distant port terminal. You pack and unpack once while the scenery changes outside your window every morning. Shore excursions to castles, vineyards, markets, and historic districts are typically included in the fare.

Most river cruises are substantially all-inclusive — fares typically cover accommodation, all meals and many drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and a full programme of guided shore excursions. This makes the upfront cost appear higher than an ocean cruise, but the all-in value is often comparable or better once you add ocean cruise extras. Luxury river lines like Uniworld and Scenic include almost everything; premium lines like Viking include most things. We compare the true all-in cost for you before you book.

The most popular European river cruise routes are: the Danube (Passau to Budapest, through Austria and Slovakia), the Rhine (Amsterdam to Basel, through Germany's Rhine Gorge and wine country), the Douro in Portugal (Porto to Salamanca, through dramatic terraced vineyards), the Moselle (Luxembourg to Koblenz), and the Rhône and Saône in France (Lyon to Arles, through Beaujolais and Provence). Each river offers a completely different landscape, culture, and culinary character.

River cruising suits travelers who want to focus on destinations rather than onboard activities, prefer an intimate atmosphere over a mega-ship resort, enjoy included cultural excursions, and like the convenience of waking up in a new city each day. It is particularly popular with travelers over 50, couples, and those returning to Europe who want to go deeper into a region rather than skimming multiple countries. It is not ideal for families with young children or travelers seeking water parks and casinos.

The most popular season is April through October, when weather is warm, flowers and vineyards are in bloom, and Christmas market cruises run November through December. Spring (April–May) offers tulip season in the Netherlands and fewer crowds. Summer (June–August) is busiest and warmest. Autumn (September–October) brings harvest season, wine festivals, and golden foliage along the Rhine and Douro. Christmas market cruises in December are among the most sought-after river cruise experiences and book up a full year in advance.
