Sete Cidades is a parish on the island of São Miguel and encompasses a colossal volcanic crater. Within the crater lies two picturesque lakes adjacent to each other and connected by a miniscule strait. Despite their close proximity, one lake appears blue and the other green. Legend claims that the lakes were formed from the tears of a forlorn princess and shepherd that could not be together. The different colours of the lakes represent the hues of the lovers' eyes – green and blue respectively. However, despite the folklore romanticism, the varying colours of the water are actually a result of reflection; the blue lake reflects the sky and the green lake reflects the surrounding earth. Regardless of its origin, the basin contains lush greenery, abundant hydrangeas, and scenic lookouts. The caldera is best explored from the outer rim, where you'll be able to see the entirety of Lagoa das Sete Cidades.

From feeding giraffes by hand to locking eyes with lions just feet away, I experienced the raw magic of Kenya that no brochure could ever capture.

Kenya had been calling to me for years. As a travel advisor, I knew I needed to experience an African safari firsthand, not just study it from afar. When the opportunity came through an Exoticca FAM trip, I said yes immediately. I wanted to understand the rhythm of the bush, the reality of game drives, and what it truly feels like to be surrounded by wildlife in their natural habitat.

What I discovered exceeded every expectation I had carried with me.

The Encounters That Changed Everything

The diversity of wildlife alone was staggering. Elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras, leopards, cheetahs, baboons, gazelles, hyenas, monkeys, impalas, wildebeest, buffalo, hippos, and bushbucks. I saw them all. But it was the intimate, unscripted moments that truly took my breath away.

One afternoon, we spotted a leopard shortly after it had made a kill. Leopards often place their prey in trees to protect it from hyenas, and this one was resting nearby. Then, without warning, it stood and stretched in full view of our jeep. What happened next still gives me chills. The leopard walked directly toward us, passed alongside our vehicle close enough that I could see the pattern of its spots, paused for a drink, and vanished into the tall grass. That moment of stillness, of witnessing something so wild and unhurried, is something I will carry forever.

We also experienced a hot air balloon safari that offered an entirely different perspective on the landscape below. After landing, we encountered four of the famous R5 brothers, a group of lions believed to be forming their own pride. They were resting when we arrived, and we were able to get surprisingly close. At one point, something startled them, and two lions sprang up facing our open jeep. My heart pounded. But our guide calmly explained that lions view the vehicle as one large object, not prey. Within seconds, they relaxed and went back to their day. That trust in our guides made all the difference.

Experiences Beyond the Game Drives

Our accommodations were unforgettable in their own right. One hotel had giraffes and zebras roaming freely around the property, with fencing only to keep hippos (surprisingly dangerous animals) from wandering in. At The Ark Lodge, we crossed a bridge to reach a lodge overlooking a massive watering hole. Once inside, you cannot leave. We watched buffalo, elephants, hyenas, and genets from multiple viewing areas, including a ground level bunker. Rain reduced our sightings since animals found water elsewhere, but I learned a valuable lesson: weather shapes everything on safari.

We also visited a traditional tribal village where life looked nothing like our everyday routines. Families lived in small homes made from mud and cow dung, with no electricity or running water. Breakfast was cow's milk mixed with cow's blood. Children attended school partly for the midday meal it provided. We witnessed tribal dances, jumping competitions, and fire starting using only sticks and dried grass. It was humbling and eye opening.

Who This Trip Is Made For

This experience is perfect for adventurous souls of any age, whether you are traveling as a couple, a family, or solo. However, I would caution anyone with back problems or mobility concerns. The drives are long and bumpy, with early morning departures that require physical stamina.

My insider advice? Early morning and late afternoon drives are essential for spotting predators. Keep your binoculars accessible and your camera ready at all times. Sit near the front of the vehicle for better angles. And most importantly, embrace uncertainty. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, and that unpredictability is part of what makes each encounter so meaningful.

Now that I have lived this adventure, I can speak to the accommodations, the guides, and the ideal pace with genuine authority. I know who will thrive here and who might find it challenging. And I cannot wait to help my clients experience the same magic that left me forever changed.

Sonja Wiebe Discovered Why Hawaii Demands More Than a Week

From painted eucalyptus trees to secret surf coves, I explored four Hawaiian islands and learned exactly how to help travelers experience this extraordinary place.

Hawaii had been calling to me for years. As a travel advisor, I knew I needed to experience these islands myself, not just read about them in brochures or hear secondhand accounts. In 2023, my husband Dave and I finally made it happen. We flew into Honolulu, spent time exploring Oahu, then hopped on a cruise ship that carried us to Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai before returning us to where we started. Two other couples traveled with us, clients who became dear friends along the way.

What I discovered across those four islands changed everything I thought I knew about recommending Hawaii to my clients.

A Place You Cannot Understand Until You See It

The mountains stopped me in my tracks, over and over again. They have this extraordinary shape, almost like someone dragged their fingernails down the side of the rock, carving deep vertical crevices into the green. I kept trying to photograph them, but pictures never capture what your eyes see standing there. The Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon, these places have colors so vibrant they almost feel unreal.

One of our best decisions was purchasing a GPS app called Guide Along. We nicknamed him Jeeves because it felt like having a knowledgeable friend sitting in the backseat, anticipating our questions and pointing out spots we would have driven right past. Thanks to Jeeves, we found a deserted beach where a seal was sunning himself on the sand, completely unbothered by our presence. We discovered painted eucalyptus trees, which I did not even know existed until I stood beneath them, staring up at bark striped with greens, reds, and oranges.

The beaches alone could occupy weeks of exploration. Black sand on one stretch, then sugar powder brown on another, followed by pink and red. The sand itself varies from soft and fine to so thick it feels like walking through a snowdrift. And the water, while rough in many places, holds every shade of blue imaginable.

Climate Shifts That Feel Like Magic

What surprised me most was how dramatically the landscape changes as you drive. On the Big Island, you can start in Hilo surrounded by rainforest, lush and dripping with green, then drive to see an active volcano with mist and heat rising from the earth. Cross to the Kona side and suddenly you are in near desert conditions, gray and ashy, where you half expect tumbleweeds. Head into the mountains and you find yourself in ranch country with cattle grazing on green hillsides. All of this on one island.

We tackled the Road to Hana, and I now understand why people feel nervous about it. The winding route can be overwhelming, but having done it myself, I can walk my clients through exactly how to navigate it, where to stop, and what to expect. We found the best shave ice spots (and yes, it is shave ice, not shaved). The version with macadamia ice cream tucked inside is something special, nothing like the corner store treats back home.

Who Should Go, and Who Should Wait

Hawaii is perfect for independent travelers who do not need every moment choreographed. It works beautifully for couples, multigenerational families, and groups of friends willing to explore.
